A Message From The Principal

Term 3 has disappeared very quickly! We are nearly at the end, and it will soon be time for a reset break before we commence with the final exciting term events. Please remember Friday 20 September 2024 will be the last day of this term. Term 4 will recommence on Monday 7 October 2024.

Open Night

It was absolutely a fantastic evening! I believe all classrooms had 90-95% of their students’ parents attend to see their work for the year. Even the weather thought it was an excellent time for the open night, with the rain-filled clouds parting to a darkening blue sky just as parents began to arrive. I would like to thank the teachers for organising their classrooms, the students for all their hard work on display, and the parents for coming along. Thank you to the P&C and canteen members for organising the catering. A big thanks to Domino Pizza, Rejjies Woodfire Pizzeria and Quick Shot coffee van for the wonderful food and drinks. Everyone’s effort made the evening a fantastic experience.

School Development Day – Term 4

A reminder that in Term 4, we do not have the first day as a School Development Day (Student Free day). The SDD will occur as usual on Friday 8 November 2024 – Albany Show Day.

Dress like Pirate Day (Friday 20 September 2024)

On the last day of term, the Student Councillors will be fundraising (gold coin donation) for Farmers Across Borders - Hay From WA with a "Dress like a Pirate Day". As Thursday 19 September, is “Talk Like a Pirate Day”, we thought bringing out the pirate items would be great idea. Hopefully, we will have lots of eye patches and hats. With pirates come plastic swords/knives. Students will be allowed these items as part of their costume, but the swords/knives must remain in the classroom during break times – student safety comes first.

Staffing Changes for Term 4

Mr Cornwell will be ceasing his Monday teaching role in Room 5.4/Year 6 at the end of this term. We thank Mr Cornwell for his support during a transition period for the Admin team. He will remain on our relief list for the foreseeable future. Next term, Mr Staude will be stepping into the Monday teaching role for Room 5.4. Thank you to Mr Staude for his support.

Miss Walter is taking some leave and will be away for the whole of term 4. We wish her a relaxing time and hope she enjoys herself. We have been lucky to have an experienced teacher who has moved to Albany to step into the Room 4.2 teacher role. Mr Jake Doubikin will be taking over as the class teacher. This week, he has spent the day visiting our school and introducing himself to the Room 4.2 students. We welcome Mr Doubikin to our school community.

Mr Rowett will cease his Tuesday and Friday teaching role with Library Skills at the end of this term. We thank Mr Rowett for his support during a transition period for the Admin team. He will remain on our relief list for the foreseeable future. Next term, Mrs Walkington will be stepping into the role. The Junior Art classes are moving to Monday and Mrs Walkington will run a fortnightly STEM program for the Years 1, 2, 5 & 6 classes. Thank you to Mr Rowett for his support.

Ms Grey will finish her teaching role in 3.4 at the end of the term and Mrs O'Donnell will commence teaching in 3.4 in term 4. Thank you to Ms Grey for her support.

Early Term 4 events

These are the following events in the first few weeks that will sneak up fast.

  • School Photos (Week 3)
  • Faction Carnivals (Week 4)

Keep your eye out for messages and letters sent home for these events.

Acting Principal Role

Many of you may know that Mrs Weadley has taken some well-deserved leave in the last four weeks of this term, and I have stepped up to the acting position. I would like to thank staff members and parents/carers for their support during my time in the top chair. My time has been hectic but rewarding. I have appreciated the positive feedback I have received from many people. Next term, I will revert to my deputy role after Mrs Weadley returns for the start of the term. I would like to thank Mrs O’Donnell for stepping up to the role of acting deputy. She has been amazing in the role. Also, thanks to Mr Fielding for his support of Mrs O’Donnell.

Primary School Music Festival

In Week 9, sixty fabulous Flinders Park students put on a spectacular show at this year’s Great Southern District Primary Schools’ Music Festival.

Our amazing choir, comprising of students from Year 5 & 6 (and one Year 4), wowed the crowd with a zany rendition of the Split Enz classic, “Six Months In A Leaky Boat”. Resplendent in a colourful array of lifejackets and with hilarious razor-sharp choreography which induced sea-sickness in some, they were a sensational finish to the first act.

Could they top “Leaky Boat” with their second song later in the show? The answer was to be a resounding YES.

They came armed with sixty fly swats that would transform into microphones, paddles, barbells and swords. And they out-Freddied Freddy with a radical re-imagining of Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”. Accompanied by Noah on electric bass and Zac on cajon, they elicited the biggest crowd involvement of the night with 600 audience members stomping, clapping and singing along.

Earlier in the show, Flinders Park were well represented by our awesome violin, viola and cello students in the Combined Primary Schools Ensemble, trained and led by Ms Helen Grandage. Their item was nothing short of mind-blowing, starting in the dark with glow in the dark bows and beautiful playing entrancing the audience.

The finale of the show was a combined schools performance of “You Are Light” with Flinders Park allocated the challenging descant part. 300 children on stage singing beautifully really was quite something and a fitting end to a BIG day.

Many thanks to the teachers that assisted Mr Staude: Mrs R. Edwards, Mrs Plant, Mrs Dente.

And to our crew of helpers: Mrs Hickman, Ms Costello and Flinders alumnus Lachie Benson.

And a HUGE well done to our amazing students who worked so hard to put on an incredible show.

Mr Staude

After School Play

Please be reminded that our early childhood playgrounds and all school toilets are not for use after 3.15-3.20 each school day (unless toilet access has been arranged by a sporting group).

Vacating the areas after school enables our cleaning staff to properly clean the toilets and verandahs uninterrupted, and our staff to put away equipment.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our lovely grounds at their best!

Open Night 2024

Last Thursday Flinders Park Primary School was buzzing with excited students and families visiting for our annual Open Night.

Many activities were on offer in the classrooms and students showcased their hard work.

Students could explore animal facts, play Uno, hunt for bugs, experience space and star gazing.

The Flinders Park Choir performed in the Assembly and our dedicated P&C Association organized Pizzas for dinner.

Skipping Certificates

After the completion of the 2024 Skipping Program, five students have managed to achieve the highest level by passing Black Level Skipping.  These students have shown remarkable perseverance to achieve this and will now have their names added to the Skipping Hall of Fame which is located on the board outside the PE office.

The following students received their certificates at the recent assembly:

Christine (year 5), Zach, Quade, Riley, Jack (all year 6)

Spelling Bee

In Week 7, students from Year 3 to Year 6 participated in the Interschool Spelling Bee at Albany Primary School, where they achieved outstanding results. These young spellers showcased impressive knowledge, focus, and determination while competing against peers from other schools. Their hard work and preparation were evident as they successfully tackled increasingly challenging words. The students represented Flinders Park Primary School with great pride.

Library Volunteers Wanted

Our School Library has recently received over 700 readers for our MiniLit Sage Program.

We are looking for volunteers to help us cover all the books so they can be used by our students as soon as possible.

If you have an hour spare after school drop off or before school pick up Monday to Thursday, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact our school office for more information.

Magpies Are In Season

It is that time of the year again, and we have magpies swooping. Today, the triggering target is the K/PP students riding bikes and wearing helmets in the Early Learning area. The ECC staff are monitoring the situation for the rest of this week to see if the swooping occurs again. If the swooping does occur, we will keep the bikes and helmets away for the last week of Term 3.

This also means the magpies are highly likely to swoop people riding bikes on the school road off Bauer Street, behind the Early Childhood Centre. In the past, the magpies were not worried about walkers; they were only concerned about people on bikes. If your child is riding to or from school, please get them to use Yatana Road and enter via our main entry or exit roads.

If the swooping is confirmed, we will alert the Albany Shire, and they will put a warning sign at the end of Bauer Road.

Please inform the Front Office if you or your child are swooped in any other area of the school. We can then make sure our school community is informed.

Flinders Park On The Art Trail

These beautiful photos are a sample of the artworks from students in Years 1-6, as Flinders Park will be participating in the Great Southern Art Trail again this year. The Albany Public Library will host an exhibit featuring a selection of artwork from local students, including ours! The exhibition will be on display for the duration of the school holidays, from 21 September 2024 to 6 October 2024.

Students have been working hard on a variety of bird inspired artworks so please come and celebrate our "Fly with Flinders" exhibition. Artworks will also be on display for Open Night in the Art Room for those unable to make it to the Library during the installation.

Dress Like A Pirate Day

Next Friday it is ‘Dress Like A Pirate Day”

Students have the chance to dress like a pirate and help raise money for ‘Farmers Across Borders – Hay from WA’

This charity is a group of W.A volunteers  that help farmers all over Australia who have been affected by drought and other natural disasters.

They do this by organising donation and transport of large quantities of hay to help feed farm animals.

All students are welcome to dress like a pirate and if possible, donate a gold coin which will be collected by the student councillors.

Eagles Cup AFL Carnival

3 September 2024

17 boys attended today's AFL Carnival after many weeks of training with Mr Fielding.  We were clearly one of the smallest sized (in stature) teams with many opposition players towering over our players yet we played with great heart in windy conditions.  The improvement in the Non-AFL players was outstanding and the teamwork by all was of a very high level.  With 3 wins and 2 losses, we ended up 3rd which is a fantastic effort.

Congratulations to the boys and a big 'Thank You" to Mr Fielding for coaching them over the last two terms.

Thanks also, to the parents who came down to support the students.

Dockers Cup AFL Carnival

30 August 2024

A group of year 5 & 6 girls participated in the Annual Girls AFL carnival in what can only be described as particularly difficult conditions.

Whilst they didn't end up in the finals, all girls reported having a great time and are keen to participate in future AFL carnivals which is the big win!!!!

Many thanks to the brave parents who stood out in the howling wind to support our players.

Good luck to the boys next week.
