A Message From The Principal

Hello Everyone,

It is great to be back at school for Term 3. I hope that you all had the opportunity to enjoy life at a different pace for a short time during the School Holidays.

Minister Buti’s Statement

Minister Buti is the WA Minister For Education and he recently made a statement about violence in schools. I am sure that many of you saw some of the media coverage about Minister Buti’s statement, however, his 10 Point Plan is not just about student behaviour in schools.  It also covers topics relating to parents and school communication. A copy of the 10 Point Plan “Standing together Against Violence” is attached to the newsletter, along with a poster that gives a graphical view of expectations and behaviours on school sites for everyone. Please take the time to read these documents so that you are familiar with what is outlined.

Some additional documents were supplied that are written specifically for parents, and these will be circulated in the coming week.

Zones of Regulation

We are implementing a new social /emotional wellbeing program at Flinders Park to assist all of our students understand their own emotions and learn skills for self-regulations. We will be sending information to parents on CONNECT, so watch out for further information.  I would like to thank Mrs Dente for leading this project.

This term we will be celebrating Book Week with a dress up day and some book week activities, many year levels will have swimming lessons, there will be various sporting events and we will finish the Term with our popular Open night. I hope that you are able to come along to some of these events.

NAIDOC Week

"For our Elders" is the theme for this year's NAIDOC Week. Our AIEO extraordinaire Mrs Edwards organized fantastic workshops and activities and with the help of amazing volunteers the NAIDOC Week was a great success.

NAIDOC Week started with an Opening Ceremony on Monday and selected students were honoured with an certificate for consistently displaying the values of inclusivity and kindness; for being a responsible student; for being respectful to staff and peers, and overall an excellent role model to all students.

On Tuesday exciting activities were planned and students participated in cooking banaks (mini damper), whole school painting, rock painting and weaving with natural resources.

On Wednesday Mrs Edwards and volunteers visited class rooms to do language lessons with students.

Our NAIDOC Week was a great success. Thank you very much Mrs Edwards and our fantastic volunteers for planning and organising the great activities. Students and staff loved being part of the NAIDOC Week workshops.

Flinders Park Statue

You may have noticed our statue at the front of the school has been renovated! Some of you may remember Sandy O’Donahue, the original artist who worked on the statue of the children 17 years ago.  The statue was created as part of a local school competition, where other artworks around the school were also done.  Students, staff and parents were involved in creating the masterpieces.

Sandy surveyed the damage caused by vandals over the Summer holidays this year and repaired the statue, in the process giving the children some new personality, culture and pizazz. Sandy also told me she was in the first cohort of students to attend Flinders Park – so this project has a lot of history!

Containers For Change

Hi Everyone!

Here at Flinders Park P.S. we are working on reducing our waste and utilising resources where we can. As a part of this, we are collecting drink containers so they can be taken to Containers For Change in Spencer Park where we receive 10 cents for every eligible container.

In 4.3 we ran a 'Guess the number of cans collected!' Competition and Logan won a toasted cheesie with her guess of 1,342 being the closest to the actual number of cans. Congratulations Logan. Last term, we collected 1,401 containers for a refund of $140.10!

The students in 4.3 were surprised by the number of cans collected and the money that would be 'thrown in the dump' if not for Containers For Change. This money, along with monies previously collected in this manner is being used to facilitate sustainable gardening practices, and we are working to educate students about the benefits of reducing waste and recycling where possible. We have increased the number of Containers For Change bins around our school to six and hope to reduce the waste and increase the recycling.

Containers For Change have also donated some can crushers so we can fit more cans into the bins 🙂

If you would like to donate any eligible 10c refund containers for recycling, please feel free to place them in the appropriate lime green bins with the white lids. With greater awareness it's hoped that the future will not be a wasteful one for us all.

Mr. Joseph

Hello children and guardians, we are starting to recognise the money that can be made from just putting 10c can into each and every one of our Containers For Change bins! If you cannot recognise the bins, they are a lime green bin with a white lid. We ended up making $140.10 from 1401 cans! If you have any cans around in your house if you don't mind dropping the cans into our bins that will help us to raise funds for the school environment and it will help make this environment an unwasteful place for all of us. Just think about all the money that could've been "thrown away into the dump" if not for Containers For Change!!!

Children's University Excursion UWA

During the July school holidays Children's University Holiday Program ran four fantastic workshops at the UWA Albany Campus for primary students to attend.

It was exciting to see so many kids eagerly participating. The fun-filled learning experiences included nature journaling, extracting Strawberry DNA in a real science lab, composing, writing and singing sea shanties and exploring fossils and rocks.

The students had so much fun and there something for everyone.

We would like to thank the Children's University, the sponsor and the dedicated and amazing workshop facilitator and volunteers for providing exciting and unique learning opportunites to primary school students.

Interm Swimming Lesson Week 3 And Week 4

Interm Swimming Lessons will be commencing next week. Please send with your child each day: bathers, towel, dry clothes to change into and a bag to store wet bathers and towel after the lesson.

Some students get extra hungry during swimming lesson week, you might want to pack an extra snack for your child.

Please see below the swimming lesson times for the next two weeks.

Please contact the school office you have any questions.

Scholastic Book Club and Book Club Coordinator Wanted

Our school is hosting two Book Clubs this term. At the beginning of term 3 and at the end of term 3, you will have double the opportunity to order amazing resources for your child.

Orders for the current issue need to be returned on Friday 4 August 2023 at the latest.

Scholastic Book Club offer a fantastic online order platform called LOOP for parents to place and pay for their Book Club orders online. The LOOP App is available on the app store and google play.

We would like to encourage all families to use LOOP for placing their orders as the school is transitioning to cashless book club ordering.

Your order will directly benefit the school and will help us to purchase valuable resources for our school. Thank you for your support.

We are currently on the hunt for a new Book Club coordinator. Please let the front office know if you would be interested in taking on this role.
